These awards provide research opportunities for graduate students and Ph.D. post-graduate scientists to conduct field research employing the facilities and habitats of the Blandy Farm. Each award provides a summer stipend ($3,000 for Ph.D.'s; $2,300 for graduate students), funds for research supplies, and on-site housing. The Blandy Farm is located at 160-m elevation on the northeastern edge of the Shenandoah Valley in northern Virginia. It supports a broad range of habitats characteristic of the region including several oak-hickory-elm woodlots, a number of old-fields that are of different ages and histories, pastures, and several small ponds. The Farm also supports the Orland E. White Arboretum with over 7,000 trees and shrubs representing more than 100 genera and 50 families. Current research emphasizes plant-insect interactions, community ecology of old-field plants and small mammals, and the effect of herbivorous mammals on the tempo and mode of plant succession. Because of the extensive and contrasting old-field habitats, the Farm is eminently suited for field experiments that focus on varied aspects of plant population and community ecology at the scale of meters to tens of hectares. Facilities available to researchers include growth chambers, greenhouses, laboratories, computational facilities, a small library, living accommodations, farm equipment, and several station vehicles. Fellowship applications should send a letter of application with a 3-5 page description of the proposed research, a curriculum vitae, and the names (and telephone numbers) of three references by 1 March 1989 to: Dr. Michael A. Bowers, Blandy Experimental Farm, P.O. Box. 175, Boyce, Virginia 22620 U.S.A. (703/837-1758).
