PARTICIPATE
Help generate ideas that will unify and advance the biological sciences. The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) and KnowInnovation (KI) would like to let you know of the opportunity to participate in a series of NSF-funded virtual and in-person events focused on identifying the opportunities and challenges for reintegrating research across the biology subdisciplines. More details can be found at https://reintegratingbiology.org/

BACKGROUND
Reintegrating biology into a unified and integrated field could be the tipping point for many exciting and transformative scientific discoveries. The National Science Foundation (NSF) is interested in hearing from the research community about the opportunities and challenges for integrating across the subdisciplines of biology. We have already heard some feedback from the community through our virtual Town Halls and the big questions that could be answered by reintegrating across biological subdisciplines. These big questions were synthesized into the following broad categories:

  • What is the unexplored potential in biological evolution?
  • How do biological traits and phenotypes scale across life?
  • How do biological entities interact and communicate through life?
  • How do biological species and systems achieve resilience and robustness?
  • How do we predict structure and function in biology?
  • How could we manipulate biological systems to further understand the rules of life?

For more details on the categories follow this link.

APPLY
We now plan to convene a diverse set of researchers representing the breadth of the biological subdisciplines for a two and half day jumpstart meeting where we can tackle how reintegrating biology may advance these broad biological themes and others. To that end, you are invited to apply for attendance at one of four simultaneous events to take place December 4-6, 2019. The application is a competitive process designed to maximize a diverse set of expertise for each event location, and these applications will close on October 21, 2019, 5 pm EDT.
