Graduate Student Research Award Committee

About the Committee

This committee is responsible for reviewing applications for the Bill Dahl Graduate Student Research Awards and the Karling Award (which is the top graduate student research award). Committee members review and score applications in an online portal and discuss the top candidates with the goal of providing 20 or more awards of $1500 each. Each year, new members join the committee as the same number of members rotates off. This committee is chaired by a member serving their third year on the committee.

Students

This committee does not accept student members.

Member Criteria

Committee membership is open to all BSA membership categories except students. Members on this must committee are appointed to represent the breadth and diversity of the botanical sciences (bryology, ecology, paleobotany, evo-devo, systematics, etc). Members serve three-year terms. Committee members are expected to participate and be engaged in committee activities and have a genuine interest in the mission of the committee.

Time Commitment

The bulk of the committee’s work is spent reviewing proposals in March and April, with final award decisions by end of April or early May. Most discussions occur via email, with the potential for one or two conference calls. Members serve for three years.
